Carolina Panthers send Robby Anderson to the Patriots

Robby Anderson has been a bit of an enigma in his stint with the Carolina Panthers, delivering an outstanding season by an underrated free agent signing his first year, before falling short of expectations after signing a fairly sizable extension of two years and $29.5 million.

His production seemingly fell off a cliff from one year to the next, producing a 1,000-yard season in his first year and then netting half of that the next. Anderson had multiple costly drops, career lows in yards per catch and catch percentage, as well as just a general lack of his usual explosiveness.

Of course, there were extenuating circumstances that could have led to this severe drop in production. Sam Darnold’s play was less than ideal as he had a noted lack of deep ball production, which is Anderson’s specialty, as well as multiple throws that were simply inaccurate when thrown his way.

There was also controversy at the offensive coordinator position where there seemed to be a lack of identity that lead to poor output and eventually cost Joe Brady his job midway through the bye week.

The New England Patriots have needed a deep threat for their dynamo young quarterback Mac Jones. Bill Belichick has also previously voiced his admiration of Anderson.

Despite his lackluster season, the Temple product is still likely seen as one of the premier deep threats in the NFL. Anderson would make perfect sense for New England to help spread the offense.

This trade makes sense for both teams, as Carolina would get much-needed draft capital as well as a major relief of cap space. For New England, they get a weapon without having to drop a hefty price.
