3 outgoing trades that make perfect sense for the Panthers in 2022
Carolina Panthers trade for Jimmy Garoppolo
Sacrificing more draft capital for a quarterback might be the worst nightmare for a Carolina Panthers fan given the recent history. Hopefully, this move can change their opinion on doing just that.
Nabbing a starting quarterback with playoff experience would be ideal for the Panthers. Especially when you have to give up relatively low value given how much was just traded for Russell Wilson.
The San Francisco 49ers need a starting cornerback and draft capital. Both of those are answered in this trade, as they get a very solid player in A.J. Bouye plus a decently high selection in 2023.
Of course, it doesn’t feel great for Carolina to trade Bouye, who performed well for the team overall last year. However, they have a lot of depth at the position, and will likely get an extension done with either Donte Jackson or Stephon Gilmore.
Jimmy Garoppolo would be a massive upgrade over Sam Darnold and could be the tipping point for this young Carolina team to take advantage of a newly weak division. During his tenure with the Niners, the signal-caller posted an eye-popping 31-14 record and guided them to the Super Bowl early in his career. He also posted fairly decent stats along the way, pushing an impressive career rating of 98.9.
It’s fair to wonder how much of Garoppolo’s success was due to Kyle Shanahan’s incredible offensive system, as well as the weapons around him. But it is fair to note that the head coach only made the playoffs when the veteran was healthy.
This is an issue within itself as Garoppolo has missed far too many games over his five-year career with San Francisco, and he is now coming off successful shoulder surgery.
It would be a win-win trade for both teams, and Carolina would have their answer at quarterback – for now anyway.
