Donte Jackson – Carolina Panthers CB

Not only is Stephon Gilmore likely to depart, but there are also some doubts surrounding the future of another talented veteran cornerback that could command serious money in free agency. Donte Jackson was playing the best football of his career before getting hurt in 2021 and could be the latest defensive back drafted by the Carolina Panthers to leave for nothing once his rookie contract came to an end.

Jackson has had some trouble staying healthy on occasions. But his production in coverage and improvements against the run over the last two campaigns mean he would be another big loss for Phil Snow and his plans to take Carolina’s defense to even greater heights next time around.

The former second-round pick out of LSU also became a prominent figure within the locker room last season. Jackson was praised by Matt Rhule for his improved leadership abilities and this is something the Panthers would be devoid of within their cornerback room outside of A.J. Bouye if both veterans did take their chances elsewhere.

Keeping Jackson won’t be cheap. He is a cornerback entering his prime that could thrive with a better supporting cast, so Carolina could be faced with another James Bradberry situation when it’s all said and done.

Hopefully, the likes of Jaycee Horn, Keith Taylor Jr., and C.J. Henderson can make the necessary adjustments to become a competent starting trio with Bouye also playing a role. But that is a huge call for the Panthers to make.
