Colin Kaepernick could be a better option for the Carolina Panthers

Sam Darnold’s season with the Carolina Panthers was surprising for a myriad of reasons. The biggest was the amount of regression that the signal-caller suffered after losing Christian McCaffrey.

Darnold was objectively awful and unable to help elevate the Panthers in any fashion. Cam Newton and P.J. Walker weren’t much better and couldn’t help turn around a Carolina season that started in promising fashion.

Simply put, Colin Kapernick cannot be any worse than many of the quarterbacks who have been given a chance in Carolina and across the league. As a reminder, Jake Fromm, Cam Newton, Ian Book, Tim Boyle, Mason Rudolph, Geno Smith, Sam Darnold, Mike Glennon, and  Andy Dalton all continued to receive chances to be a part of disjointed NFL rosters.

Finding an argument that Kapernick cannot be better than any of the players listed above is a difficult argument to make. His numbers are better and there is an ability to make a play with pure athleticism – something the Panthers enjoyed plenty of during the glory days of Newton.

Bringing in Kaepernick will be a splashy move that should undoubtedly make major headlines and give Carolina some welcome good PR for once. But it is also one that can only improve Carolina at his point.
