3 reasons Baker Mayfield could be the Carolina Panthers’ consolation prize

Could Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield be the Carolina Panthers’ consolation prize if they miss out on Deshaun Watson?
The Carolina Panthers are in the running for trade target Deshaun Watson and obviously are in need of a quarterback. Sam Darnold and Cam Newton combined to play some inconsistent football during the 2021 season, so finding an upgrade shouldn’t be difficult, and the organization doesn’t need a top-five signal-caller to take the next step.
This means Carolina could find an answer in the draft, free agency, or a cheaper trade in pursuit of making progress without mortgaging their future. It is speculated that the Houston Texans are expecting three first-round picks and at least two players in exchange for Watson. A large price to pay for a player who has had legal concerns and could be facing suspension for the alarming accusations that have surrounded the quarterback over much of the last year.
With this in mind, the Panthers have to deal with these concerns or pay the high price it would take for Watson to take a step forward. One clear option that the front office should be considering is the current Cleveland Browns starter, Baker Mayfield.
Carolina is stuck finding a successor to the excitement and greatness Newton brought to the franchise at the peak of his powers. Darnold and Teddy Bridgewater weren’t able to come close to replacing the icon and the former NFL MVP himself was unable to live up to expectations.
It is time to think outside the box once again. Here are three reasons why Mayfield might be Carolina’s consolation prize this offseason.
