3 key takeaways from Panthers WR D.J. Moore’s contract extension
By Dean Jones
Carolina Panthers can now build around D.J. Moore
With so many questions surrounding other pass-catchers on the Carolina Panthers, getting their most productive wide receiver extended was a great move by the front office. D.J. Moore’s presence will be needed if the team wants to finally start turning things around sooner rather than later and those in power will now have the opportunity to build around the Maryland product rather than worry about his status moving forward.
Obviously, this all starts with the two problem position groups on offense that have held the team back. Carolina has made two tremendous signings on the offensive line with Bradley Bozeman and Austin Corbett arriving, which should solidify the interior significantly for whoever is going to be under center.
Just who that will be is unclear right now. The Panthers missed out on Deshaun Watson after their relentless pursuit spanning more than a year, leaving them facing the prospect of drafting one, picking up a free agent, or even going back into the trade market for someone like Baker Mayfield or Jimmy Garoppolo.
Moore has yet to benefit from consistent quarterback play. But the Panthers seem to be moving away from Matt Rhule calling the shots if the last two years are any indication and Carolina also has a strong quarterback evaluator in Ben McAdoo to further boost their thought process.
If, and it’s a big if, the Panthers get the right man under center, then Moore should be able to thrive as a result. And who knows, this contract might look cheap when it’s all said and done.
