Panthers 2022 NFL mock draft: Needs shift after Week 1 of free agency
By Dean Jones
Carolina Panthers select Jesse Luketa
Considering how much of a lottery seventh-round selections are, the Carolina Panthers have done well to secure Stantley Thomas-Oliver III and Phil Hoskins in recent seasons. General manager Scott Fitterer has an eye for low-end draft talent in terms of how they can translate to the professional ranks, so hopefully, this is a trend that can continue this time around.
A player like Jesse Luketa has the physical attributes that can potentially develop into something more. The Penn State product is capable of slotting in everywhere across the second level and has the short-area burst that does catch the eye on occasions.
One area where Luketa thrives is tackling. He is a physical downhill defender that loves nothing more than finishing off plays in a violent fashion, with his potential to generate pressure something else the prospect has working in his favor.
Luketa has a lot to learn and doesn’t possess enough natural instincts to gain meaningful reps right out of the gate. If the player wants to make it in the NFL, then he must also improve when it comes to coverage.
The Panthers wouldn’t have much to lose by taking Luketa and seeing how he can develop. If it doesn’t work out, then it hasn’t cost them much to find out one way or another.
