4 big observations the Panthers can take from Malik Willis’ pro day
By Dean Jones
Malik Willis has an absolute cannon
This is nothing new to those who have seen Malik Willis play for Liberty or during drills at any stage during the assessment process, but the quarterback’s arm is absolutely sensational. Much more is needed to make a go of things at the next level, obviously, but teams will always bet on this elite trait and worry about the rest later.
It might take time, as it did with Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes. When it clicks, then it could be worth its weight in gold.
The Carolina Panthers don’t have much time considering how hot things might get for head coach Matt Rhule with another season of failure. A new man at the helm could also have their own ideas about Willis and whether or not he is the answer.
However, the velocity and effortless deep throws Willis displayed at his pro day were breathtaking at times. Something that won’t go unnoticed by the Panthers when they sit down to conclude which prospect they should take at No. 6.
Willis does have some flaws when it comes to processing and decision-making. However, these are coachable traits and quarterbacks coach Sean Ryan has worked wonders with the likes of Deshaun Watson and Matthew Stafford in the past.
There is no signal-caller generating more hype than Willis thanks to his arm strength. Whether this will be enough for Carolina to take the plunge is another matter.
