Carolina Panthers could have competition for Malik Willis

After no fewer than eight coaches and front office figures from the Carolina Panthers went to check out Kenny Pickett on Monday, there was another very strong representation from the franchise for Malik Willis’ pro day. Head coach Matt Rhule was seen joking around with the signal-caller before his throwing session, with others such as Scott Fitterer and Ben McAdoo also keeping a close eye on developments throughout.

Had the Panthers not sent a large committee over to Liberty, then it could have been the strongest indicator yet that they preferred Pickett. While the Pittsburgh product might still be the pick, there is a growing sense that Willis might be the guy based on intangibles alone.

It’s a real conundrum for the Panthers. But there is every chance Willis might not be around if the Detroit Lions end up taking him at No. 2 or another team leapfrogs Carolina via a trade-up.

Doing due diligence on all the top quarterback prospects is only right. This year’s draft is extremely unpredictable at the top end and all it takes is one bold move similar to what the San Francisco 49ers put together in 2021 for Trey Lance to completely shift the tide.

The Panthers must be ready for every eventuality. Nobody that comes into contact with Willis is anything but impressed by his skills or the man himself, but Mike Tomlin has already wined and dined the signal-caller and he won’t be the only one interested when the time comes.
