Carolina Panthers have a huge decision to make

There are other contenders if the Carolina Panthers go forward with drafting a quarterback in 2022. They are clearly high on Kenny Pickett and there is also the intriguing presence of Matt Corral to consider, but Malik Willis is rapidly becoming the fans’ darling and someone that poses a significant problem for the organization ahead of decision-day.

If the Panthers pass on Willis and he goes on to become an exceptional pro, then there is just no telling how low confidence will be in this regime providing they are still around by that point. Someone like the Detroit Lions, Atlanta Falcons, Pittsburgh Steelers, or Seattle Seahawks could end up taking the signal-caller soon after or before Carolina comes off the clock, so this is a high-stakes situation they simply have to get right.

Plenty of coaches and front office members will have their say. But ultimately, it might come down to Matt Rhule’s perception of Willis given that his contract states he’ll get the final say on personnel decisions.

That is a major worry considering how things have gone regarding recruitment under center. If Carolins strikes out, then expect a complete reset next year with patience wearing thin.

Willis is a wildcard, there’s no getting away from that. However, the momentum he’s generated in recent months indicates the Panthers have a monumental decision to make regarding the player.
