Cam Newton is the best free-agent remaining

After some incredible trade moves and free-agent signings during the offseason so far, the quarterback pool is pretty barren. Cam Newton is not only the best free-agent option, but he brings a sense of continuity to the franchise.

Not only would he cost less money, but the Carolina Panthers would not have to trade anything to another team to get him. Other options like Jimmy Garappolo and Baker Mayfield require assets to acquire their services and neither player seems to be a definite upgrade on Newton.

Sam Darnold was a mess last season after Week 3. P.J. Walker is an okay backup, but he is not a starting quarterback. Not to mention fans are done with the rejected and underachieving quarterbacks from other teams.

One of the rookie quarterbacks like Kenny Pickett or Malik Willis are good options, but neither quarterback should be starting in 2022. Newton could bridge the position for a season and let one of them step into the spotlight in 2023.

A one-season contract allowing Newton to prove himself would be a bargain. There’s also no telling how much someone like Willis or Pickett could learn from the veteran.

Signing him as quickly as possible should be the motive for the Panthers. Letting a healthy Newton get a full offseason with Ben McAdoo along with the revamped offensive line and receivers would be very beneficial not only for building the culture but also the chemistry between teammates.
