Carolina Panthers keep the door open for Cam Newton

Another option the Carolina Panthers haven’t ruled out regarding the quarterback position is re-signing Cam Newton. The former NFL MVP returned to the organization midway through last season and although results didn’t improve all that much, it’s clear the signal-caller left a big mark on the staff and players within the locker room.

Whether this will be enough for the Panthers to extend Newton remains to be seen. According to Scott Fitterer, discussions have taken place with the player, but the agreement has to be suitable for both parties when it’s all said and done.

Newton would at least provide the fans with a level of optimism they wouldn’t get with Sam Darnold, who remains “in the lead” for the starting job in 2022 judging by Fitterer’s comments. However, the general manager claimed the Auburn product knows where the team stands, so it’s up to him what comes next.

"“The thing with Cam is it’s got to be a fit for us and it’s got to be a fit for him just as well. He’s looking for a certain opportunity. And the door’s still open for us. We’re very open to Cam. We’ll see where it goes. He knows where we stand. I think he and Matt [Rhule] had a really good conversation, from my understanding. So we’ll just see where it goes.”"

This might be the Panthers covering their bases, in all honesty. However, it’s worth keeping a close eye on and much will also depend on whether Newton gets any interest from elsewhere.
