Want to know how good Georgia’s defense was in 2021? Jermaine Johnson had to transfer from the Bulldogs to Florida State to get some more playing time ahead of the draft.
Although it is extraordinary that a projected first-round pick couldn’t attain meaningful minutes with the newly crowned national champions, Johnson made the right call by switching to the Seminoles and more than proved his worth during his final college season.
Johnson’s speed flying off the edge resulted in 70 tackles, 11.5 sacks, and 17.5 tackles for loss to send his draft stock to stratospheric levels. His physicality at the point of attack is remarkable and the player’s ability to rush with his hand in the dirt or as an outside linebacker only enhances the prospect’s chances of success at the next level.
Agility is another word that can be used to describe Johnson’s overall game. There is a nice variety to his pass-rushing moves and is patient in run support, letting plays develop before making up ground in impressive fashion.
There is the small matter of Johnson’s lack of experience playing as a defensive end, even though his production was absolutely top-notch when finally given an opportunity. Johnson could also do with making slight improvements in areas such as tackling technique, and he will need to bulk up slightly against more physically imposing NFL linemen.
