Another potential reunion between Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers hasn’t been ruled out in 2022. But the quarterback is currently keeping his options open and stated in a text message to ESPN’s Adam Schefter that a number of teams have made offers to secure his services next time around.
The Panthers have held discussions with Newton and outlined what role he could potentially play for the organization next time around. According to Joe Person of The Athletic, there was even an offer on the table to be the team’s backup in the event Deshaun Watson chose them over other suitors, which didn’t pan out after a painstaking pursuit that lasted more than a year.
Newton found life difficult upon making his bombshell return to Carolina ahead of their Week 10 game at the Arizona Cardinals. Not entirely unexpected when one considers what little time he had to familiarize himself with the offensive scheme and develop chemistry with his new teammates.
What comes next for Newton is unclear. There are some who feel that he no longer has a place in the league, but former NFL MVPs don’t grow on trees and the leadership he brings on the field and within the locker room is something that could make him a useful addition somewhere.
