Saints signed Andy Dalton

After missing out on Deshaun Watson, the New Orleans Saints pivoted back to one of their own, re-signing quarterback Jameis Winston to a new deal, making him the starter again after he recovers from his ACL injury.

To back up Winston, New Orleans decided to sign Andy Dalton on a one-year deal. The veteran, who spent most of his career as the Cincinnati Bengals’ starting signal-caller, has plenty of experience and could be a decent signing.

However, the decision becomes laughable when you remember that the Saints signed hybrid player Taysom Hill to a large deal just a few months ago, expecting him to be their franchise quarterback of the future.

Despite all the hype prior to last season, Hill was not a great quarterback aside from his ability to run the ball. His contract is a reported $40 million over four years and could have gone up to $95 million if he became the starting option.

With Winston back in the mix and Dalton arriving, New Orleans will likely save plenty of money but Hill is expected to move to more of a tight-end role. His contract was restructured, but paying an average of $10 million a year for an unproven player in the role is not exactly how the Saints thought this would play out.

It’ll also be laughable if Dalton is thrust into the starting role at some point if Winston is unable to go or struggles.
