5 key former Panthers players still looking for new homes in 2022
By Dean Jones
Which former Carolina Panthers players are still searching for new homes following the first few weeks of 2022 free agency?
Although big changes were expected within the Carolina Panthers this offseason, those in power brought back a number of players that were expected to be shown the door. This is good from a continuity standpoint, even if their production needs to increase significantly in some cases for the team to stand any chance of making an impression next season.
The Panthers have made some impressive signings, particularly on the offensive line with Bradley Bozeman and Austin Corbett joining the ranks. Some key pieces on defense such as DaQuan Jones and Haason Reddick departed for better offers and Carolina also needs to find a solution at left tackle as well as a potential upgrade on quarterback Sam Darnold.
No fewer than 12 members of last year’s roster were given extensions. The Panthers also signed a number of reserve/futures contracts as they look to fight their way onto the team during OTAs and training camp.
Some haven’t been as fortunate just yet. Here are five former Panthers players that are still searching for new homes in 2022.
Former Player No. 1
A.J. Bouye – Former Carolina Panthers CB
The decision to release A.J. Bouye for additional cap relief seemed like a strange move at the time. But the Carolina Panthers managed to secure an extension with cornerback Donte Jackson soon after to soften the blow.
Bouye is a former Pro Bowler that was solid if not spectacular during his one and only season in Carolina. There were some frailties in coverage and run support, so the Panthers probably made the right call moving on considering the young talent already on the roster.
What comes next for Bouye is uncertain. He remains on the market and with the 2022 NFL Draft fast approaching, it might be a while yet before anything is confirmed.
