A quick glance at the play of Desmond Ridder and the first thing that strikes is his ability as a dual-threat quarterback. This is shown in his 40-yard time of 4.52 seconds at the NFL Scouting Combine, which was the fastest of players at the position that ran and 0.13 seconds quicker than the next fastest which was EJ Perry out of Brown.
A look at his time in college gives another indication of Ridder’s ability to run the ball as he finished his collegiate career with 28 scores on the ground. The signal-caller’s abilities aren’t all running the football, as he has demonstrated encouraging progress in a throwing capacity, too.
While not a complete cannon, Ridder still possesses the arm strength to load up the deep ball. A lot has also been made of the player’s poise – despite being an exceptional runner he is not afraid to hang around in the pocket even when under pressure from defenders.
This is paired with a release that has quickened over his college career. Ridder has the ability to get the ball out quickly and on target, but there are still improvements to be made in terms of his weight of throw at times.
Despite not turning the ball over on a high level in Cincinnati – 28 interceptions in 4 years – Ridder’s accuracy and decision-making have come into question.
The issue Ridder seems to have at times is not taking what the defense gives him and unnecessarily putting the ball in harm’s way. Something which the player may get away with in the NCAA, but NFL defenders will make you pay for these mistakes.
While Ridder has improved his accuracy to a degree, it’s still an area of improvement for the player. His lack of accuracy at times can lead to contested catches and failing to allow his receivers to catch the ball in stride. Another improvement needed by the prospect is the consistency to make throws when his feet aren’t set.
The Carolina Panthers have had some significant problems with Sam Darnold and his happy feet. So this is something the team may want to avoid.
However, one big tick in Ridder’s box is his leadership skills. In the 50 games he started collegiately, 48 were starts and he was commended for his attitude within the Bearcats program which included leading them to a playoff berth despite not being a power-five school.
We’ve seen what a natural leader like Cam Newton has done for this team. Having a signal-caller with similar qualities would only be a bonus.
