Marquis Haynes – Carolina Panthers DE/OLB

Once stud outside linebacker Haason Reddick left for the Philadelphia Eagles in free agency, it was absolutely imperative that the Carolina Panthers re-signed Marquis Haynes. Something they were thankfully able to accomplish on a team-friendly deal.

Haynes quietly became a key cog on the defensive line rotation in Carolina. Although he wasn’t blessed with many reps, all things considered, there’s no doubt he made the most out of his opportunities when they arose to record seven sacks over the last two seasons.

This could lead to additional playing time for the Ole Miss product now that Reddick is no longer part of the equation. Frankie Luvu will also be hoping for additional starting reps after signing a new contract of his own, so it will be interesting to see how things unfold and there is also the prospect of Carolina selecting a talented individual from the college ranks.

Even if Haynes doesn’t win a starting job, his influence as a key depth chart piece cannot be understated. There’s been a lot of player turnover on the Panthers under the current regime, so the more continuity they have heading into 2022, the better their chances will be.

Haynes has earned the right to a more prominent role next season and potentially beyond if things go well. But the edge defender will have to work exceptionally hard this offseason to achieve his objectives.
