Carolina Panthers players past and present have been reacting to the tragic death of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins.
The NFL world was shaken to its core on Saturday morning after the death of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins was confirmed by his agent to Adam Schefter. It might have been another tactless tweet from the ESPN insider initially, but the news saw an outpouring of grief across social media among current and former teammates, influential figures across the league as well as fans in the hours following the announcement.
Haskins was a legendary figure at Ohio State before becoming a first-round pick by Washington. He was reportedly struck by a car in South Florida, where he was working out alongside other Steelers players such as star running back Najee Harris ahead of his return to team activities.
The signal-caller was looking to make his mark in Pittsburgh and potentially compete with Mitchell Trubisky for the starting job after the retirement of Ben Roethlisberger. Mike Tomlin issued a statement via the team’s social media account praising Haskins for the man he was and how sorely he’ll be missed.
"“I am devastated and at a loss for words with the unfortunate passing of Dwayne Haskins. He quickly became part of our Steelers family upon his arrival in Pittsburgh and was one of our hardest workers, both on the field and in our community. Dwayne was a great teammate, but even more so a tremendous friend to so many. I am truly heartbroken.”"
The devastating news also sparked tributes from Panthers players past and present immediately following the confirmation of Haskins’ passing. Something that will be sorely felt for some time yet and this could have been even more closely felt had Carolina signed the player following their meeting last year.

This was an absolute tragedy. Another sign of life being precious and nothing should be taken for granted.
Haskins was a tremendous teammate and universally liked among his peers. His exceptional 2018 season with the Buckeyes undoubtedly inspired the likes of Justin Fields and C.J. Stroud to follow in his footsteps – so his legacy will live on.
The much-loved figure leaves behind a wife, a family, friends, and a football community that will all miss Haskins terribly. Our sincere condolences and prayers to everyone affected.
