What are some major problems that could emerge if quarterback Sam Darnold starts again for the Carolina Panthers during the 2022 season?
The chances of Sam Darnold starting at quarterback for the Carolina Panthers look a little better now than they did once the 2021 season came to a conclusion. Despite the organization’s best efforts, they were unable to land a big fish in the trade market and although there are a few options still available, general manager Scott Fitterer did state that the former USC standout was in the lead.
At least for now.
Darnold just didn’t perform up to the required standard following his trade from the New York Jets. His decision-making and processing were erratic and there are clear footwork issues, something that’s been prevalent throughout his career at the next level.
There will be plenty more twists and turns to come, obviously. But here are four problems that could emerge if Darnold is Carolina’s Week 1 starter next season.
Problem No. 1
The confidence factor with Sam Darnold
While Sam Darnold did appear confident in his own ability to become a productive starter based on his comments during a Bussin’ with the Boys podcast appearance, there was a clear lack of belief not only from fans and teammates last season but also from the quarterback himself.
This would be a clean slate for Darnold in a final chance to prove his worth. However disappointing it might be to those on the outside looking in.
The Panthers will find it difficult to remove the No. 3 overall selection in 2018 entirely from the equation given they triggered his fifth-year option with a guaranteed $18.85 million, but not finding an alternative option would send morale to an all-time low across the board.
