Grading every pick from an impressive Panthers 2022 NFL Draft class
By Dean Jones
Matt Corral – Carolina Panthers QB
When the quarterbacks started sliding way into Day 2, the Carolina Panthers were put on red alert. Although the organization didn’t have a second or third-round pick to speak of following trades for Sam Darnold and C.J. Henderson, general manager Scott Fitterer managed to pull off a deal with the New England Patriots for the No. 94 overall selection and a chance to get themselves a long-term solution under center.
There was reportedly no consensus from their evaluations. But in the end, taking Matt Corral was seemingly a risk worth making this far down the pecking order.
Corral has plenty of big-game experience and possesses a tremendous attitude that will serve him well. Nobody is expecting the Ole Miss product to start right away, but working with Ben McAdoo and Sean Ryan could give him a shot at seeing the field in 2021 depending on how Darnold fares.
The prospect comes with the best release and underneath accuracy of anyone in this class. His composure in the pocket is good and there is also a lot to like about his ability to run the football in specific situations – even though he is a little undersized.
Draft Grade: B+
Had the Panthers reached for a signal-caller such as Corral at No. 6 overall, this grade would look far different. However, considering where they picked him up, it was well worth the gamble.
