Do the Carolina Panthers need another safety?

Another area that the Carolina Panthers ignored during the 2022 NFL Draft was bolstering their safety options. Something that could leave them a little short of established production behind projected staring duo Jeremy Chinn and Xavier Woods, who was acquired from the Minnesota Vikings in free agency.

The addition of Woods should help Chinn enormously. Carolina also brought back Sean Chandler and Juston Burris, but both would have shown inconsistencies that pose a concern despite them occupying backup positions.

Defensive coordinator Phil Snow did indicate in his media availability before the draft that he would like to add another safety at some stage. This didn’t happen from the college ranks, but there are a few good options remaining in free agency that could help in the short term.

There is no great rush for the Panthers, who will likely take a look at what they have in minicamp before making another move. It’s also worth remembering that the team is high on Myles Hartsfield – a versatile defensive back that’s made the most out of almost every snap since arriving as an undrafted free agent in 2020.

It’s a fluid situation. And as stated previously, the Panthers have the salary-cap space to make something happen.
