Matt Rhule – Carolina Panthers HC

If one could pinpoint where things have gone wrong for Matt Rhule during his first two years as head coach, start with some bemusing decisions at the quarterback position.

Releasing Cam Newton after initially stating how excited he was to work with the former NFL MVP, signing Teddy Bridgewater only to give up on him after just one season, and trading three draft picks over a two-year period for Sam Darnold are just some of the lowlights, with P.J. Walker failing to deliver and the former NFL MVP even returning for a brief period over the second half of 2021.

This has left Rhule under some significant pressure. Although a public seal of approval from team owner David Tepper prior to the draft took some of the heat off.

For now, at least.

Although some would argue that Rhule did not deserve the chance to draft a signal-caller this far into his tenure, it’s absolutely essential that the former Baylor man puts Matt Corral in the best possible position to succeed.

Lending advice and guidance will be crucial. But given the urgency for Carolina to start putting more wins on the board, there will obviously be a temptation for Rhule to throw Corral in at the deep end – especially if Darnold struggles early on.

This is something that should be avoided unless there is 100 percent confidence in Corral being ready. And make no mistake, more questionable personnel moves could see big changes next year.
