Kalon Barnes – Carolina Panthers CB

There was a collective sigh when the Carolina Panthers selected another former college player of Matt Rhule’s in the seventh round. But that does not detract from an outstanding contributor Kalon Barnes could be if he puts it all together.

This will be a work in progress. It’s also worth remembering that Barnes is still learning the position after transitioning from a wide receiver during his time at Baylor.

Barnes has things that cannot be taught. His athleticism is off the charts and the player also generated national headlines by scorching the earth at Lucas Oil Stadium en route to one of the fastest-ever 40-yard dash times at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Some technical elements to playing the cornerback position need significant work where Barnes is concerned. However, the prospect will have the benefit of Steve Wilks’ experience, which should be a massive boost to his initial and long-term development.

While Barnes gets other areas of his game up to speed and his exceptional physical attributes are harnessed in the right way, the player can be a special team contributor and will have a lot of fun doing so.

Fans are right to be skeptical about any Rhule associate joining the fold. But there is a chance for Barnes to become a real steal if everything clicks into place.
