Matt Corral beats out Sam Darnold in training camp

Although this does appear to be a long shot, the prospect of Matt Corral beating out Sam Darnold for the starting position in training camp cannot be entirely dismissed. The quarterback joined the organization upon the recommendation of offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo – a highly respected talent evaluator that clearly feels the signal-caller has something to offer within his scheme.

Compare this to McAdoo’s comments about Darnold during his pre-draft assessment process, and a real opportunity could be awaiting Corral providing his transition to a pro-style offense and environment goes according to plan or perhaps even better than anticipated.

Corral has a lightning-fast release and appears to be more accurate than Darnold. His ceiling is also a lot higher based on what we’ve seen from the former USC standout throughout his four-year career so far.

It will be fascinating to watch the two in the stifling heat of Spartanburg. The Carolina Panthers have also reportedly not entirely closed the door on a move for Baker Mayfield or Jimmy Garoppolo despite moving up for Corral in Round No. 3.

Getting the better of Darnold in training camp and starting Week 1 would be more than Corral or any fan would have envisaged, one suspects. Taking advantage of opportunities, building chemistry, and learning the playbook rapidly are just some key ways this feat can be accomplished.
