Carolina Panthers set up Matt Corral to fail
It’s hard not to look at the current predicament enveloping the Carolina Panthers and not think there isn’t a real sense of urgency to win in 2022. Matt Rhule has accumulated just 10 wins over his first two seasons compared to 23 losses and although team owner David Tepper kept him around for another shot, that might not be the case if things don’t start trending in a positive direction.
Rhule gambled on Sam Darnold last spring. But the former Baylor man might be reluctant to bet his job on the player based on the level of performance he gave the team more often than not last season.
This might also pose a complication for Matt Corral. Panicking could lead to the quarterback getting thrown in ahead of schedule, which represents a significant problem if there is still development needed.
In truth, if the Panthers are not convinced in Darnold – which is pretty obvious by this point – then trading for Baker Mayfield or Jimmy Garoppolo remains a better option than giving Corral more than he can handle.
How the Panthers handle Corral in 2022 will tell us plenty about his prospects in the long term. Patience might be a virtue in this instance, but time is a luxury Rhule no longer has.
