Cam Newton – Former Carolina Panthers QB

Living up to being the No. 1 overall selection is a difficult task.

One that Cam Newton accomplished in an impressive fashion.

Newton took a small market team and propelled them into the national spotlight with a swagger and confidence that had not been seen before on the Carolina Panthers. This was matched by an electrifying style of play that opposing defenses had little hope of stopping when the signal-caller was fresh and firing on all cylinders.

The jewel in Newton’s crown was obviously his NFL MVP campaign in 2015. His production was nothing short of exceptional and the only disappointment was that the Panthers could not round off the season with a Super Bowl to show for their efforts.

Injuries have taken their toll on Newton, which is understandable considering how much punishment he’s taken and how little the Panthers did to put the right pieces around him consistently.

Newton made a bombshell return to the franchise in 2021, which was arguably the highlight of a dismal run.

It didn’t turn things around results-wise and Matt Rhule benched the player when Sam Darnold returned. But this should not detract from how idolized he is within the fanbase, who’ll always support the quarterback almost unconditionally.

Dialogue remains open about a potential contract extension for Newton. But even if he doesn’t return, giving someone else the No. 1 jersey is absolutely out of the question.
