Ranking the 10 worst draft picks in Carolina Panthers franchise history
By Luke Gray
Devin Funchess – Former Carolina Panthers WR
- Drafted 41st overall in 2015 (Michigan)
- 61 games played
- Released 2019
Devin Funchess was drafted No. 41 overall back by the Carolina Panthers in 2015. But he never quite reached the heights many thought the wide receiver was capable of despite flashing on occasions.
During his four years in Carolina, Funchess never totaled more than 840 receiving yards. For someone who found himself as WR1 from early in his career, you’d expect a better return.
The story of Funchess’ career was plagued by drops in Carolina. Of all receivers targeted at least 32 times during the 2018 campaign, Funchess had a drop rate of 12 percent, dropping six catches according to Pro Football Focus.
Panthers fans will remember when Funchess dropped a number of passes against his hometown Detroit Lions in a 20-19 loss. Just how things ended up going for the player in Carolina.
Since leaving Carolina, Funchess has not settled, first landing with the Indianapolis Colts where he featured just once due to injury. The player then moved on to the Green Bay Packers, opting out of the 2020 season due to valid concerns around COVID-19.
He created controversy in 2021 when he made an anti-Asian slur and racist gesture during a press conference. Funchess was released by the Packers later that month.
Last season he was signed to the San Francisco 49ers practice squad in late November but was released soon after.
