Cade Mays – Carolina Panthers OL

It’s hard to root against Cade Mays. The offensive lineman clearly loves the game of football and is all business on the practice field and in a competitive environment – so it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Tennessee product becomes an instant fan favorite due to this attitude.

Mays clearly wasn’t too thrilled about the scrutiny that came with the pre-draft evaluation process. Something he described hilariously as the “underwear Olympics“.

This statement indicates it was probably a relief for Mays to get back down to football-related activities. The interior protector has the versatility and leadership qualities that the Carolina Panthers value highly in their college recruits, which has led to many wondering whether the player can secure a starting role at left guard right out of the gate.

These expectations would be too much, in all honesty.

Mays has some flaws in technique and footwork that need to be rectified before seeing the field for a prolonged period of time. But his desire suggests this can be coached up by the experienced presence of James Campen.

It will be fun to see how Mays progresses in training camp and during his rookie campaign. The player will obviously be given every chance to carve out a role for himself, but fans should not be disappointed if he needs a little more time to refine his craft.
