P.J. Walker – Carolina Panthers QB

All the talk is rightfully focusing on the upcoming quarterback battle between Sam Darnold and Matt Corral for No. 1 on the depth chart. There are also plenty of rumors circulating about another potential arrival under center if those within the Carolina Panthers feel it can help their chances in 2022.

This has left P.J. Walker as something of a forgotten man. The signal-caller was brought back on a one-year deal despite failing to convince anybody he is a worthy starter and unless some major improvements are made in training camp, he might find himself on the outside looking in when it’s time to cut the roster down.

Walker has flashed – especially during his starting triumph against the Detroit Lions in 2020 – but nothing he’s shown after that suggests he can be anything more than a backup at the highest level.

The former XFL MVP candidate is another Matt Rhule college player brought to Carolina. Something that’s come with mixed success looking at the players acquired by the Panthers over the last two years.

What comes next might be out of Walker’s hands even if he does take a monumental step forward during the preparation period. Carolina needs help right now and it’s also worth remembering that the coaching staff only took two quarterbacks with them onto the roster in 2021.

If all else fails, then a practice squad spot if nobody else takes on Walker might be the more likely option.
