Terrace Marshall Jr. and Shi Smith – Carolina Panthers WRs

The Carolina Panthers spent two draft picks on wide receivers in 2021 when Terrace Marshall Jr. and Shi Smith were taken in the second and sixth round respectively. Both players produced some top numbers in college and a strong preseason from the duo left plenty of reasons to be encouraged about their chances of making an immediate impact.

This did not materialize. Marshall was virtually anonymous in the passing game and was even a healthy scratch for the Panthers’ game at the Miami Dolphins late in the campaign, meaning there is much work ahead for the former LSU standout this offseason.

Smith was active just six times and failed to make a lasting contribution. An offseason arrest for the South Carolina product isn’t ideal, so it’s absolutely essential he hits the ground running with a view to becoming more involved in 2022.

Perhaps this was just growing pains for both as they acclimatized to life in the NFL. But we’ll know much more about what their long-term aspirations are this time next year.

Expectations are higher for Marshall considering the Panthers took him at No. 59 overall. He has the athletic attributes to become a real force, but getting open consistently was a major issue for the player and something that has to change at the earliest possible opportunity.

As for Smith, maybe carving a role out on special teams as a punt returner is the best way to become an influence.
