Teddy Bridgewater – Former Carolina Panthers QB

Signing Teddy Bridgewater to a lucrative contract in 2020 free agency was the first of many grave errors by the current regime at the most important position in football. The quarterback looked the part deputizing for Drew Brees on the New Orleans Saints and those in power felt this was the guy to steady the ship and succeed Cam Newton, who was released in messy circumstances shortly after.

Bridgewater is a solid quarterback who needs a lot of help around him. Not having the benefit of Christian McCaffrey in the backfield for anything more than three games hurt his cause, but the signal-caller did manage to get three wide receivers over 1,000 all-purpose yards in front of a torrid offensive line.

However, the main problem was Bridgewater failing to get things done in the clutch. This is something the former Louisville star found extremely difficult, with the Panthers losing many close contests as a result.

This saw Bridgewater’s record from his one and only season in Carolina stand at 4-11. He was traded to the Denver Broncos for a sixth-round pick and a $17 million dead-cap sum after the Panthers opted to acquire Sam Darnold from the New York Jets.

In hindsight, Carolina might have been better off with Bridgewater last time around. But this situation is just a small example of how badly things have been managed in terms of quarterback evaluation at the pro level.
