Kyle Allen – Former Carolina Panthers QB

It was a whirlwind start to Kyle Allen‘s time under center for the Carolina Panthers. An encouraging first start in 2018 was matched by a phenomenal opening to the 2019 season, which saw the player gain starting reps over a consistent period of time after Cam Newton suffered a preseason injury to prevent him from taking the field.

Allen looked the part and certainly offered hope that the Panthers could go on a surprising playoff run. However, this honeymoon period ended abruptly and the signal-caller’s production deteriorated despite some useful players around him.

In fairness to Allen, he was the man who helped Christian McCaffrey achieve his historic season where the running back became only the third to secure 1,000 yards rushing and receiving in the same year. But it was not enough and Carolina’s disastrous form even saw team owner David Tepper end the tenure of Ron Rivera along the way.

Allen’s 6-7 record as a starter isn’t the worst in the world by any stretch. Certainly not compared to what the Panthers have managed to accomplish since he was traded to Washington.

Just what the future holds for Allen is unclear. A serious knee injury ended his 2020 season early after four games and although he’s made a full recovery, the Arizona native now finds himself behind Taylor Heinicke and Carson Wentz on the Commanders’ depth chart.
