Carolina Panthers must consider Jimmy Garoppolo’s recent surgery
Jimmy Garoppolo took the decision to have surgery on his throwing shoulder once the season concluded. Something that will no doubt be beneficial long-term, but it only adds to the risk associated with a potential trade from the Carolina Panthers’ point of view.
Garoppolo is reportedly healing well and is expected to be ready for camp. But it might take some time for the veteran to get up to true football speed and something that will factor into Carolina’s thought process before coming to a final decision.
There is some concern about the Eastern Michigan product’s ability to stay healthy, on occasions. But he played almost every snap in 2021 which might indicate his 2020 problems are behind him.
The Panthers need someone that can come in right from the outset and take complete command. Garoppolo would be capable of this if he was 100 percent healthy, but that is far from a guarantee at the present moment.
Carolina would likely perform their own medical checks before rubber-stamping the potential trade. Garoppolo feels confident he can have a smooth offseason on a new team and there is even a chance that no trade transpires and he ends up either released or backing up Trey Lance in San Francisco.
Time is of the essence for Garoppolo and the Panthers. So this remains a fluid situation with plenty of moving parts.
