Which teams could potentially beat the Carolina Panthers to Baker Mayfield if the quarterback is released before the 2022 campaign?

The ongoing dilemma surrounding the Carolina Panthers and their options at quarterback is likely to be resolved in the not-too-distant future. Sam Darnold just hasn’t done enough over his first four years in the league and Matt Corral is seen as more of a development project rather than someone that can immediately transform the franchise’s fortunes.

That leaves the Panthers facing the prospect of a potential trade for Baker Mayfield. It’s another significant gamble, but one that the organization could undoubtedly make with an urgent need to win in 2022.

Carolina would probably like to get Mayfield or someone else on board before camp. Trade talks have progressed without being finalized between the Panthers and Cleveland Browns, but there is also the scenario where the signal-caller is released entirely at some stage.

If this comes to fruition, here are four teams that could beat the Panthers to Mayfield’s signature if he hits the open market.

Carolina Panthers could lose Baker Mayfield to the Buccaneers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been linked to Baker Mayfield on a couple of occasions this offseason. Although this died down once Tom Brady decided to return, he represents an intriguing acquisition if the former Oklahoma standout is cut loose.

Having Mayfield sit behind such a legendary figure as Brady could make all the difference. Learning from arguably the best quarterback of all time might be the spark that ignites him to bigger and better things moving forward.

Tampa Bay has Kyle Trask as a development project. The Carolina Panthers would also be able to offer Mayfield a starting gig right out of the gate, which is the redemption he’s probably looking for.
