P.J. Walker – Carolina Panthers QB

It was something of a surprise to see P.J. Walker secure another one-year extension from the Carolina Panthers this offseason. Perhaps his previous connection to Matt Rhule from their time together at Temple helped, but it’s hard to picture a scenario where the former XFL MVP candidate makes a bigger impression this time around.

Walker has had some nice moments when on the field and things aren’t easy for any quarterback coming off the bench. But his poor decision-making and the Panthers’ lack of confidence in the player when Sam Darnold got hurt are damning indictments of his production so far.

This scenario at least provides Walker with a good opportunity to get a full offseason program under his belt. Even if the chances of him making the roster appear slim with Darnold and Matt Corral ahead of him on the depth chart.

When one considers that Carolina could also go back into the trade market for another quarterback such as Baker Mayfield or Jimmy Garoppolo, it’s almost a guarantee that Walker won’t be part of the equation.

If the worst-case scenario happens for Walker and he is released, then getting picked up by another team would also be a big question mark. Something that could lead him back to the Panthers as a practice squad member.
