Baker Mayfield is far superior to Sam Darnold

This is the long and short of it really.

Whether you agree with the Carolina Panthers making another veteran trade to hopefully improve their fortunes at the quarterback position or not, one thing that cannot be disputed is Baker Mayfield is a far superior option under center than Sam Darnold.

The stats tell their own story. Mayfield has also proven capable of producing moments of magic in clutch situations, which is a task that has proven challenging for Darnold, to put it mildly.

Much has been made about Mayfield’s ability to lead within the locker room. But judging by some recent comments from his Cleveland Browns teammates, that’s probably been blown out of all proportion.

Anyone who thinks Darnold is a better talent than Mayfield based on the film is just pushing their own agenda. However, that might not be enough for the Panthers to pull the trigger considering they still owe the USC product a whopping $18.85 million after triggering his fifth-year option.

The Panthers will want to get this situation resolved quickly one way or another. The sooner Mayfield potentially comes on board, the more time he’ll have to learn the playbook and familiarize himself with his new teammates with a view to hitting the ground running in a different environment.

At least from the outside looking in, this is easily the best option Carolina has. Whether it happens or not is the big question.
