Cam Erving – Carolina Panthers OT

The Carolina Panthers have taken some significant risks in free agency and the trade market since Matt Rhule became head coach.

Cam Erving might be the biggest bust of all.

No sooner had the 2021 legal tampering period begun than the Panthers swooped to sign Erving. The coaching staff appeared pretty bullish about the former first-round pick’s chances of finally solving an ongoing riddle at the left tackle position, which proved to be anything but when push came to shove.

Erving was unable to turn his career around with almost no consistency and a distinct lack of accountability. Something that was prevalent across the offensive line outside of Taylor Moton, who remained consistent when all around him crumbled.

The money Carolina allocated to Erving was unbelievable. He is now further down the pecking order following a strong period of recruitment this offseason, but the Florida State product will count $6.51 million against the salary cap in 2022.

A huge number for a backup whichever way one looks at it.

Thankfully, Erving’s contract expires in 2023 and the Panthers would be wise to let him take his chances elsewhere.
