Sean Chandler – Carolina Panthers S
It was a surprise to see the Carolina Panthers extend Sean Chandler this offseason. Although the safety is far from guaranteed a roster spot given other options and the arrival of Xavier Woods in free agency from the Minnesota Vikings.
Chandler is a former Matt Rhule college player that gained some significant reps in 2021. There were times when his contribution was efficient, but poor running angles and a lack of consistency in coverage ensured his production was not up to the required standard.
The Temple product is on thin ice entering training camp this summer. New defensive backs coach Steve Wilks will need to be blown away by the player for him to get anything like the same role he enjoyed last time around.
Much will depend on how many safeties Carolina takes through onto the roster and what the Panthers are planning to do with versatile defensive back Myles Hartsfield. Whichever avenue they choose to go down, it’s hard to look at Chandler’s prospects with any sort of encouragement.
At 26 years old, there could be more to come from Chandler providing he takes everything Wilks says on board. But to say time is of the essence would be an understatement.
