Ranking the 5 most underrated Panthers players in franchise history
By Dean Jones
Chris Gamble – Former Carolina Panthers CB
There was a quiet, relaxed demeanor to Chris Gamble whenever he took the field. The former first-round pick let his play do the talking, which was evident from start to finish during his time with the Carolina Panthers.
Gamble wasted no time in stamping his mark on the franchise, attaining 13 interceptions over his first two seasons and concluding his career with 27 takeaways, which was a team record. He regularly locked down some of the league’s best and his performance against Pro Football Hall of Famer Calvin Johnson in 2011 was one of the best displays of man-coverage you will ever see.
Had teams not gotten wise and stopped throwing in Gamble’s direction, there’s just no telling what his stats would look like. A true shutdown cornerback in every sense of the word and arguably the best at the position in Panthers franchise history.
Unfortunately after appearing just for times in 2011, Gamble was cut by the Panthers and announced his retirement soon after. But there is no doubt the Ohio State product looked back on his career with a great sense of achievement.
The Panthers have their next great corner in Jaycee Horn providing there are no further complications on the health front. If he goes on to have the same impact Gamble accomplished, then Carolina will reap the rewards for years to come.
