Cleveland Browns could sign Sam Darnold
It didn’t appear as if the Cleveland Browns were too keen on including Sam Darnold as part of the deal that brought Baker Mayfield to the Carolina Panthers. This is probably down to the fact he’s owned a whopping $18.85 million in 2022 after those in power inexplicably picked up his fifth-year option before a single practice.
This was yet another grave error at the most important position on the field. Something the Panthers could be paying for over a considerable period of time if they have no option other than to release Darnold before final roster cuts take place.
If this scenario comes to fruition, then the Browns might consider bringing in Darnold on a much cheaper deal. This will be dependent on what transpires with Deshaun Watson, who could get a lengthy suspension from the league relating to sexual misconduct.
This leaves Cleveland with just Jacoby Brissett as their No. 1 until Watson comes back. Darnold would provide extra competition and might even get a shot under center if given enough time to pick up the playbook.
The Browns have some dynamic playmakers, an exceptional running attack, and a stout offensive line. So this could be the road to redemption Darnold is looking for if the Panthers cut the player entirely in the coming weeks.
