Seattle Seahawks could sign Sam Darnold
The Seattle Seahawks were linked heavily with Baker Mayfield, but a story about them never really being interested emerged a day before his trade to the Carolina Panthers was officially confirmed.
But it could all be part of the bigger picture where Seattle is concerned.
If the Seahawks are really going into the season with Drew Lock and Geno Smith as their starting options after letting Russell Wilson leave for the Denver Broncos via trade, then their chances of making any impression are minimal at best.
This would put them in a prime position to land a top signal-caller from an exceptional draft class in 2023. Someone like Bryce Young and C.J. Stroud could be there for the taking should Seattle’s major changes this offseason result in a top-three selection.
Sam Darnold and Pete Carroll have the obvious USC connection even though neither were around at the same time in college. Trading for the signal-caller isn’t in their train of thought, one suspects, but that could change if he could be signed in free agency with little in the way of financial commitment.
Stranger things have happened in the NFL. But it does appear as if the Seahawks will hold firm with what they have and hope for the best.
