Baker Mayfield will make Carolina Panthers competitive
Whether he ends up playing well or not, Baker Mayfield is an experienced quarterback who has proven success. This is something the Carolina Panthers did not have on its roster before this trade.
Mayfield and Sam Darnold have been in the league the same amount of time. But if the Panthers put stock into the USC product again, it would have been laughable.
If this trade didn’t happen, Carolina might’ve won a few games but there was no way it was making the playoffs. Even if Christian McCaffrey got back to his All-Pro form.
With Mayfield, it gives the team a fresh start. And he’ll at least be able to help the Panthers float above water in the potential playoff race.
So far in his career, Mayfield hasn’t been a bad quarterback. He just hasn’t been very good.
He’s been slightly above average. Mayfield also hasn’t stayed very healthy.
Mayfield has an attitude that should help motivate Carolina and keep them in a playoff hunt. The NFC doesn’t have many great young quarterbacks and this can be his opportunity to shine.
If Mayfield is competent, it should also help the defense by not having to be on the field so much.
Either way, this season will be an interesting one.
