5 huge winners from the Panthers securing Baker Mayfield trade
By Dean Jones
Who were the big winners from the Carolina Panthers striking a deal with the Cleveland Browns for quarterback Baker Mayfield?
The Carolina Panthers will now move forward with Baker Mayfield as their starting quarterback after a deal was finally confirmed with the Cleveland Browns. Those in power remained stubborn regarding the financial aspect of the trade, leaving them paying just $5 million of the player’s salary next season and giving up what could turn out to be a fourth-round pick in 2023.
This has been a divisive topic among the Panthers fanbase, with many sick and tired of short-term fixes and gambles at the most important position in football. However, there is an urgency to get things right next season and Mayfield represents their best chance to do that based on the dwindling options available.
Is it another risk? Undoubtedly.
But if Mayfield can return to something like his 2020 form following an injury-hit campaign last year, then things might be looking up after all.
Without further ado, here are five huge winners from the Panthers acquiring Mayfield via trade.
Winner No. 1
Matt Rhule – Carolina Panthers HC
Just how head coach Matt Rhule managed to swing yet another quarterback trade is anyone’s guess. But if Baker Mayfield doesn’t work out, it’s a luxury he’s unlikely to be afforded again.
Rhule knows full well what’s at stake from a personal perspective and for the Carolina Panthers overall next season. Any more underachievement will not be tolerated by the fans and although team owner David Tepper remains confident in his abilities, that might not be the case for much longer.
Mayfield’s arrival improves the Panthers’ chances of progression in 2022. Something that could also enhance Rhule’s chances of an extended stay in Carolina.
