4 major concerns surrounding Carolina Panthers trade for Baker Mayfield
By Dean Jones
Can Baker Mayfield and Ben McAdoo coexist?
One thing that’s resurfaced over the offseason regarding Baker Mayfield is a scathing pre-draft assessment from Ben McAdoo about his potential to thrive at the next level. Now the two parties will try and coexist on the Carolina Panthers.
In fairness to McAdoo, his points were valid at the time and might have changed now. It’s also worth remembering how influential the offensive coordinator has been within the Panthers in recent months, so it’s unlikely this trade happens without some significant input from the former New York Giants head coach.
Mayfield will now be playing catch-up in terms of learning the complex offensive scheme, which he’ll need to do in double-quick time before taking the field for training camp at Wofford College. McAdoo is also known for putting his quarterbacks through the wringer with intensity, which is something the new arrival must also be ready for.
If Mayfield and McAdoo can start off on the right foot before Week 1 against the Cleveland Browns, the better their chances will be. There are also some winnable games on the schedule early on that the Panthers have to take advantage of.
Of course, there could be a personality clash between the pair. The consequences of which don’t bear thinking about.
