Can Baker Mayfield prove himself all over again?

Playing hurt with a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder is a decision Baker Mayfield would probably like to have back. It’s a sign of his work ethic and willingness to help the team, but the production didn’t match and the Cleveland Browns weren’t going to wait and see if things improved next time around once Deshaun Watson became available.

Mayfield is a proven performer when his back’s against the wall. The quarterback also has a major chip on his shoulder after some suspect treatment from the Browns this offseason.

Now that his move to the Carolina Panthers is confirmed, Mayfield must prove his worth all over again. Not exactly the most ideal situation for someone entering Year 5 of their professional career, but this should provide the Heisman Trophy winner with enough motivation to prove people wrong.

Carolina is obviously banking on Mayfield getting back to something like his 2020 form behind a much improved offensive line and with Christian McCaffrey alongside him in the backfield. Getting off to a fast start will be crucial, but the spotlight will be on the player more than ever with so much on the line.

Not many teams were banging down the door with trade offers for Mayfield. But that should not detract from what a good move this could be if the player puts everything else to the back of his mind and focuses on football moving forward.
