Where does Carolina Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield compare to others at the position within the NFC South in 2022?

The Carolina Panthers certainly improved their chances of winning in 2022 with the acquisition of Baker Mayfield from the Cleveland Browns. Although the trade was a polarizing one amongst the fanbase, few would argue that the former Oklahoma standout isn’t a significant upgrade on Sam Darnold based on their previous production.

Carolina also has Matt Corral as a potential long-term option. But if the Panthers thought he was ready for starting duties right out of the gate, then Mayfield would not be part of the organization.

A smooth transition is absolutely essential for Mayfield in training camp. Especially considering he’ll be coming up against his former team in Week 1 after a gift from the schedule gods.

With that being said, we took a look at how Mayfield stacks up against other quarterbacks in the NFC South in our preseason power rankings.

The Atlanta Falcons swung for the fences for Deshaun Watson this offseason – as did the Carolina Panthers – and it looked for a long time as if they were in pole position to acquire the controversial quarterback before he agreed to join the Cleveland Browns. This resulted in the team trading Matt Ryan to the Indianapolis Colts and going for a complete reset at the position.

Desmond Ridder was their choice from the college ranks after his memorable season for Cincinnati en route to the college football playoffs. This was seen as a long-term solution for the Falcons, but nothing more than that at the moment.

Ridder brings a professional mindset and nice intangibles. But one should consider him a work in progress until further notice.
