What are some knee-jerk reactions the Carolina Panthers could make if the organization begins the 2022 season in a disappointing fashion?
The Carolina Panthers pulled out all the stops this offseason in the hope of becoming relevant in 2022. It’s been a long time since the organization had anything legitimate to cheer, so the bar is pretty low despite the obvious talent at Matt Rhule’s disposal.
Of course, much will depend on how Baker Mayfield transitions to the Panthers following his high-profile trade. The quarterback should be raring to go in a different environment, but his shoulder, leadership, and 2021 production are obvious concerns heading into the campaign.
Looking at the schedule, Carolina must get off on the front foot to give themselves a fighting chance later on. If they don’t generate positive momentum over the first six weeks, then it’s going to be another rough ride for a fanbase that is growing weary of witnessing losing football.
With that being said, here are four knee-jerk reactions the Panthers could make with a bad start in 2022.
Knee-Jerk Reaction No. 1
Carolina Panthers could go younger on defense
There appears to be a nice blend of youth and experience on defense for the Carolina Panthers heading into the season. But if certain veterans aren’t pulling their weight and the team starts poorly, some drastic changes to the rotation might not be far behind.
Carolina has plenty of hungry youngsters further down the depth chart itching for additional involvement. If the coaching staff feels like things are becoming a lost cause, then this could be the spark that ignites Phil Snow’s unit to bigger things in the short and long-term.
Hopefully, this won’t be the case given the options at Carolina’s disposal. Having a more efficient offense is something else that could potentially work in their favor as the campaign progresses.
