Baker Mayfield‘s arrival to the Carolina Panthers via a high-profile trade from the Cleveland Browns comes with a significant amount of intrigue. The quarterback was deemed surplus to requirements after his former employers secured the services of Deshaun Watson, leaving the No. 1 overall selection in 2018 facing an uncertain future heading into the final year of his deal.
The Panthers coveted Mayfield for a while as an upgrade on Sam Darnold. Patience regarding the financial implications ensured that Carolina got a good deal, but the signal-caller has a huge point to prove in pursuit of a new deal next spring.
Whether that’s with the Panthers or elsewhere is a topic for another day. Even though it represents a better chance to win immediately, it’s still another big-time gamble at the most important position on the field.

After three consecutive five-win seasons, now is the time Carolina must show progression. Mayfield might be the missing piece on offense, so if things click into place right away and the Oklahoma product thrives in Ben McAdoo’s system, then it could lead to some major improvements.
Attaining a playoff spot is a lofty goal to aim for. Something that would likely save Matt Rhule’s job and result in an extended stay for Mayfield.
