Carolina Panthers got an upgrade at QB

Moving forward with Sam Darnold as the starting quarterback next season was not an option after disappointing following his trade from the New York Jets. After months of negotiations, the Carolina Panthers secured the services of Baker Mayfield to hopefully provide much-needed stability at the most important position in football.

The Panthers were stubborn and got a good deal for Mayfield. But that isn’t necessarily guaranteed to shift the needle during a make-or-break campaign that could go either way.

Mayfield has a fire within him and a huge chip on his shoulder after some suspect treatment by the Cleveland Browns this offseason. It’ll be a crash course in learning the system and developing chemistry with his teammates, but this is a challenge the Oklahoma product should relish in a new setting.

The signal-caller also has the benefit of impressive pass-catchers, an improved offensive line, and a returning Christian McCaffrey. A fast start is absolutely crucial, but there is hope Mayfield can provide the spark that ignites Carolina at long last.

If Mayfield cannot return to his 2020 form and another quarterback gamble fails, then it’ll be a catastrophe. Something that would cast further doubt on the player’s long-term future and also lead to landmark changes across the organization for good measure.
